Concussion

Concussion, also called commotio cerebri, is a mild traumatic brain injury that typically occurs as a result of a blow or shock to the head. Although most people recover completely within a few weeks, some experience persistent symptoms -- what's known as post-concussion or post-commotio syndrome.
It is precisely these consequences that we treat in the course of Hemi's concussion.

Treatment should suit you

The sequelae after a concussion vary from person to person and can include headache, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. In order to ensure an effective recovery, it is crucial that the treatment is adapted to your late follow-up and needs. An individual treatment plan is therefore the foundation of your course.

Just as there can be a big difference in how quickly you get over a broken bone, there can be a big difference in how long it takes to get upstairs after a concussion. And just like after a broken leg, the rehabilitation must be adapted to the individual.

Says Signe Bruun Munksgaard, neurologist and headache specialist at Hemi Headache Clinic.

We therefore offer that you can speak to a specialist team and receive a tailored course of treatment to help you manage and reduce the challenges you experience after a concussion.

“It has been a huge help that I was able to get time already in the same week and also didn't need a referral. All in all, my experience at Hemi was absolutely fantastic and my meeting with the specialist was both very personal and professional.”

Course of treatment for concussion

In a course of treatment for concussion, in cooperation with your team of specialists, you will have a personalized treatment plan drawn up that will include the gradual resumption of activities. You have unlimited access to consultations and free chat with your team so you can get the support and guidance you need throughout your course.

You will be assigned a responsible physician and a daily responsible coordinator. Your treatment team may consist of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and/or psychologists, depending on your profile and symptoms.

Here's how it works

1. The course of treatment starts with identifying your symptoms, including through questionnaires. These measurements are repeated continuously throughout the treatment course to ensure accurate follow-up and evaluation of progress.

2. Treatment begins with a preliminary examination (FUS), where a doctor makes or confirms your diagnosis and main symptoms, as well as a follow-up with your coordinator.

3. Based on the mapping, your medical history, symptoms, as well as your own motivation and mental state, a tailored treatment plan is made.

4. Then you will have continuous follow-up, adjustment and treatment by your treatment team according to treatment plan.

Evidence-based treatment

Hemis Concussion's concept is based on the following evidence-based principles, where we:

Creates progress and security through close support and follow-up.

Uses the Concussion Staircase tool for early, graded and continuous exposure to symptoms.

Gives you knowledge that creates understanding and strengthens your self-care. Changes occur both during and between consultations. That's why we work with tasks, which may include physical and mental training exercises that are related to your symptoms.

Ensures your progress with ongoing support and motivation.

Your main symptom

Often, we find that the primary symptom or the biggest challenge falls into one of the following seven categories:

1. Migraine and headache
Typically persistent pain or migraine-like symptoms.

2. Cognitive Challenges
Problems with concentration, memory or mental fatigue.

3. Psychological challenges
Feelings of anxiety, depression or stress.

4. Balance disorders
Problems keeping balance or feeling dizzy.

5. Cervicogenic symptoms
Pain and stiffness in the neck that can affect the head.

6. Vestibular signs
Dizziness or discomfort with rapid movements or visual stimuli.

7. Oculomotor manifestations
Problems with withdrawal, which can cause discomfort when reading or focusing.

This allows you to tailor the treatment to focus on your primary challenge.

Different types of concussion

Concussions can vary in severity and symptoms. Some experience mild symptoms that quickly subside, while others may have longer-lasting nuisances. It is important to get a correct diagnosis to ensure proper treatment.

Non-medical treatment by pain therapy (PRT)

PRT (Pain Reprocessing Therapy) is a new approach to treating chronic pain, such as chronic headaches or migraines, for those who have tried everything with only slight or no effect on your pain. Read more about PRT here.
