It can be difficult to determine when to contact your doctor about your headache. Therefore, we asked our neurologist, Signe Bruun Munksgaard, what you should pay special attention to and when you should contact your doctor in order to be able to get an examination and possibly get treatment.
According to our neurologist and headache specialist Signe Bruun Munksgaard, you should see your doctor if you experience:
- Recurrent headaches
- Change in your headache
- Other symptoms besides the headache
- That the headache is limiting in your daily life
Recurrent headaches
“If you experience recurring headaches and you don't have a good effect from the over-the-counter medicine you take to get the headache away, then I think you should go to the doctor for some advice”.
Change in one's headache
“If, over a shorter period of time - weeks to months - you experience a sudden change in how often your headache comes, you should see your doctor. It may be that you have had a headache a couple of times a month for a long time, but suddenly begin to suffer from it weekly or daily. Then it's always a good idea to discuss it with your doctor and get an investigation into what the cause might be.”
Other symptoms besides the headache
“If you suddenly start experiencing other symptoms alongside your headache, such as dizziness or difficulty speaking, you should see a doctor immediately. In fact, it is important both to investigate whether there is a relationship with one's headache and to rule out any other causes of these symptoms.”
The headache affects one's daily life
“If you find that you have a disabling headache more than once a week, so that you can't do your job as you normally would, and also have no effect from pain medication, then I think you should talk to your doctor and explore what options there are”.
