Sumatriptan used for seizure treatment of migraine
Sumatriptan has been developed specifically for the treatment of migraine attacks. Sumatriptan works in the brain by inhibiting the release of certain signaling substances and contracting blood vessels.
60-80% of patients with migraine experience an effect on their seizures. In 30-40% of seizures, the headache may recur after a few hours. The treatment in these cases can be repeated after min 2 hours.
The most frequent side effects are chest tightness, palpitations, fatigue, nausea, muscle soreness and hot sensation in the body.
Sumatriptan must not be used if you have previously had a blood clot in the brain or heart or have very high blood pressure.
Sumatriptan should be taken no more than 2 times a day and a maximum of 9 days a month to avoid medication overuse headaches.
Sumatriptan is available in several different formulations:
- Tablets 50 or 100 mg
- Nasal spray 10 or 20 mg
- Injection 6 mg
It is important to take Sumatriptan as early as possible in the migraine attack to achieve the best effect. However, you should wait until after the aura is over if you have migraine with aura.
If there is any, but not sufficient, effect of the first dose, one can repeat the treatment after min 2 hours.
