Rizatriptan is used for the seizure treatment of migraines.
Rizatriptan has been developed specifically for the treatment of migraine attacks. Rizatriptan works in the brain by inhibiting the release of certain signalling substances and constricting blood vessels.
60-80% of patients with migraine experience an effect on their seizures. In 30-40% of seizures, the headache may recur after a few hours. Treatment in these cases can be repeated after a minimum of 2 hours.
The most frequent side effects are chest tightness, palpitations, fatigue, nausea, muscle soreness and hot sensation in the body.
Rizatriptan must not be used if you have previously had a blood clot in the brain or heart or have very high blood pressure.
Rizatriptan should be taken at most 2 times a day and a maximum of 9 days a month to avoid medication overuse headaches.
Rizatriptan is available in several different formulations:
Tablets 5 or 10 mg
orodispersible tablets 5 or 10 mg
lyophilized tablets 10 mg
It is important to take Rizatriptan as early as possible in the migraine attack to achieve the best effect. However, you should wait until after the aura is over if you have a migraine with aura.
If there is any, but not sufficient, effect of the first dose, one can repeat the treatment, provided that at least 2 hours pass.
