Lisinopril is used as a preventive treatment for migraines.
Lisinopril has been developed to treat high blood pressure, but can also have an effect on migraines. When you are given the medicine, it is not to lower your blood pressure, but to treat your migraines.
Lisinopril may work by stabilizing blood vessels, but the exact mechanism of action is not known.
The effect of lisinopril usually sets in after 1-3 weeks. On average, lisinopril will halve the number of migraine attacks, however there is great variation from person to person.
Lisinopril is generally well tolerated. The preparation rarely lowers a normal blood pressure. However, some patients with low blood pressure may experience dizziness when they get up, especially at the beginning of treatment.
Some people experience dry cough, diarrhoea, headache and kidney damage.
Lisinopril should not be used in certain types of cardiac disorders.
Before starting treatment, heart rate and blood pressure measurements and the following blood tests should be performed: renal/fluid count and liver count.
Usually you start by taking 10 mg once a day for a week. After this, 20 mg once a day.
In case of lack of effect after 2 months, decrease by 10 mg for a week and then stop.
In case of good efficacy, treatment is continued for ½-1 years, after which the dose can often be reduced in consultation with the doctor.
